King Edward's School BATH

Boys' hockey

Hockey is played by all boys at King Edward’s School throughout the Spring Term. Teams are offered at A, B and C level through Years 7 – 9 and at A and B level from Year 10 through to our senior teams. Those who do not represent the School in inter-school fixtures still experience competitive game play through intra-school competition. The fixture card is balanced and challenging, with the majority of fixtures taking place on Saturdays. There are also a few midweek games against local rivals.

The School enjoys annual participation in the county school competitions at each age group as well as at a number of local festivals. In addition, Boys’ Hockey regularly hosts overseas touring sides, includes its own weekend tour at the junior end of the school, and hosts the internationally recognised KES Hockey Festival, involving over 40 schools from across the British Isles and overseas. In addition to the outdoor programme, the School also participates in the National Indoor Hockey competition during the Autumn Term.

Boys’ Hockey benefits from a committed and experienced coaching staff. Each year group receives a weekly two hour games session during the school day which focuses on the development of individual skills and understanding of the game. In addition, boys participate in a weekly training session, with an emphasis on developing teams for competition. The second half of the Autumn Term is also used to provide pre-season training.

The School has an artificial pitch located in the centre of the main site and benefits from regular use of two additional artificial pitches at the University of Bath. The School also has good links with Team Bath Buccaneers Hockey Club and City of Bath Hockey Club, with an increasing number of boys representing each club at various levels.

Representative hockey is well supported, with pupils showing potential nominated to enter the ‘Single System’ hockey talent development programme at Junior Development Centre level. In recent years, pupils have also progressed to the regional teams, with two of our pupils achieving selection to represent England at U16 and U18 level.
